Seed Treatment
ZAPPA® or “Zap Padi Angin” is specially formulated for paddy seed treatment to enhance rapid seed germination for direct seeding rice grown under aerobic and anaerobic systems. Seedlings from ZAPPA® PLUS treated paddy seeds are known to have increased in their root and shoot growth. Seedlings germinated from paddy seeds treated with active oxygen present in ZAPPA® PLUS are able to grow vigorously under anaerobic direct seeding. Such being the case, the germination of the untreated weedy rice seeds present in the soils is delayed or even suffocated. In this way, the problem of weedy rice affecting yield in the country is eliminated. This notion is confirmed by MARDI researchers in Tg. Karang and Bertam who evaluated the effectiveness of ZAPPA® PLUS as seed germination enhancer and the control of the weedy rice. The result of the study showed that seeds treated with ZAPPA® PLUS were able to grow at 5 and 15 cm of water depth. The benefit of using ZAPPA® PLUS as mentioned by the study were:
- Reduction of weed problem;
- Control of rat attack due the presence of standing water;
- Reduction of water usage (water remained in the paddy fields after ploughing);
- Elimination of seed borne diseases; and
- Improvement of seed quality.
Farmers prefer the use of ZAPPA® PLUS for both aerobic and anaerobic direct seeding because its application results in vigorous seedling growth; hence, it is able to compete with the weeds. ZAPPA® PLUS had won 3 awards: 1) Gold Medal for Invention & Research Exhibition Awards 2002, UPM; 2) Silver Medal for Invention and Innovation Exhibition, Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Malaysia, 2002; and 3) Silver Medal from the 32nd International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products at Geneva, 2004.
